It looks as if 2012 will be another exciting year due to the efforts of the many volunteers who support the Quality and Productivity Section. To start, a number of conferences are slated for this year. The Quality and Productivity Research Conference (QPRC) will be held from June 4–7 at California State University at Long Beach. As in the past, this conference will feature both contributed and invited sessions on a number of topics, as well as a full-day short course presented by Di Michelson of SAS Institute. Papers can be submitted to Daniel Jeske at daniel.jeske@ucr.edu. The abstract submission deadline is March 1.
The Fall Technical Conference, chaired by David Edwards (dedwards7@vcu.edu), will be held October 4–5 in St. Louis, Missouri. The deadline for submission of papers is February 28. Additional information is forthcoming, so check the Q&P website for more information.
While not directly sponsored by Q&P, the first Conference on Statistical Practice should be of interest to many of our members. The conference will be held at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld from February 16–18. Take a moment to read the full program.
In conjunction with the QPRC, the Mary G. and Joseph Natrella Scholarship offers a $3,500 grant and $500 travel stipend to students pursuing full-time graduate work in statistics. Complementary conference and short course registration also will be provided. The recipient is expected to give a presentation on their graduate research work at the QPRC. The application deadline is March 1; visit the Natrella Scholarship website for application materials.
The Quality and Productivity Section also will offer up to three $400 travel grants to students looking to attend the Joint Statistical Meetings in San Diego, California, later this year. Contact Willis Jensen (wjensen@wlgore.com) with questions or to request an application. Applications will be accepted through March 31.
If you can’t attend one of the conferences mentioned above, keep an eye out for our web-based training classes. These courses are offered on a periodic basis throughout the year and announced through the Q&P Community on the ASA website. In 2011, two webinars were offered, one by Veronica Czitrom (Graphical Analysis of Designed Experiments) and the other by Larry George (How to Forecast Repairable System Failures). If you have ideas for future offerings, contact Ananda Jayawardhana (ananda@pittstate.edu), the section’s webinar coordinator.
Finally, the Q&P Section is always looking for people willing to volunteer their time to an appointed position or offer their expertise in a short course, webinar, roundtable lunch, or similar event.
