The Caucus for Women in Statistics and Data Science is an international, professional statistical society, formed in 1971 for the education, employment, and advancement of women in statistics and data science. CWS’s vision is a world in which women in the statistics and data science profession have equal opportunity and access to influence policies and decisions in workplaces, governments, and communities.

The caucus’s mission is to advance the careers of female statisticians and data scientists through providing advocacy, resources, and learning opportunities; increasing their professional participation and visibility; and promoting and assessing research that affects female statisticians and data scientists.

Its membership is open to anyone who supports CWS’s mission and vision. It collaborates with the American Statistical Association and Committee on Women in Statistics on activities including awards, webinars, and conferences.

Starting in 2022, CWS has held a virtual, 24-hour global conference called the International Day for Women in Statistics and Data Science. The conference was developed in collaboration with the ASA and Portuguese Statistical Society.

In 2025, there were about 1,200 registrants from more than 80 countries. In this virtual environment, participants ranging from high school students to retirees shared their research and experiences to inform and improve the statistics and data science fields.

The 2026 conference will be held October 6. For more information, visit the CWS and IDWSDS websites.

The Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Outreach Group Corner is a regular component of Amstat News in which statisticians write about and educate our community about JEDI-related matters. If you have an idea or article for the column, email the JEDI Corner manager at jedicorner@datascijedi.org.
