Adrian Raftery, Boeing International Professor of Statistics and Sociology and adjunct professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, has been awarded the IFCS 2026 Research Medal, one of the highest honors presented by the International Federation of Classification Societies. The award recognizes individuals whose research has made fundamental contributions to the advancement of classification, clustering, data science, and related fields.
Raftery is widely recognized for his pioneering work on model-based clustering and helping establish a statistical framework based on finite mixture models that provide a coherent approach to clustering, classification, and density estimation. He has also made foundational contributions to Bayesian model selection and Bayesian model averaging, providing systematic approaches for addressing model uncertainty in complex statistical analyses. His research has had broad impact across disciplines, including genomics, environmental science, sociology, astronomy, and network analysis.
In addition to his research contributions, Raftery has had a major impact on the field through mentorship, leadership, and service. He founded the Working Group on Model-Based Clustering, an ongoing international forum that has fostered collaboration, supported early-career researchers, and facilitated numerous fruitful and enduring scientific collaborations. Many of the papers presented at IFCS conferences stem from those collaborations.
As an ASA Fellow, Raftery is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and an honorary member of the Royal Irish Academy.
