The Diversity Workshop and Mentoring Program brings together historically underrepresented minority statisticians and data scientists, creating a supportive community in which connections flourish and careers advance.
Diversity Mentoring Program, StatFest See Record Participation
For the first time in four years, the Committee on Minorities in Statistics held in-person meetings for both its signature programs, the Diversity Mentoring Program and StatFest. The Diversity Mentoring Program matched 45 mentees to mentors across all sectors of statistics. And, despite Tropical Storm Ophelia landing the same day, StatFest welcomed approximately 170 attendees.
This Fall, StatFest Is Coming to You
StatFest 2022 is a free conference aimed at encouraging undergraduates who are Black, indigenous, or people of color and have quantitative interests to pursue careers or graduate studies in the statistical and data sciences.
Sydeaka Watson
Sydeaka Watson began her college education as a mathematics major at Dillard University and University of New Orleans in her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. The introductory statistics course she took as an elective became one of her favorite courses and she eventually earned her PhD in the field. Since then, she has had such professional experiences as professor, biostatistician, data scientist, and consultant. Watson has supported and led STEM diversity efforts as chair of the ASA Committee on Minorities in Statistics, co-organizer of the Dallas chapter of Blacks in Technology, and organizer of the Dallas chapter of R-Ladies Global.
StatFest Back for 21st Year in 2021
StatFest 2021 is a free conference over two half days aimed at encouraging BIPOC undergraduates to pursue careers or graduate studies in the statistical and data sciences. This year’s event will take place virtually September 18–19.
